The Leicestershire Fieldworkers, through its local groups, has since 1976 undertaken a programme of archaeological fieldwork throughout Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The Group has its own newsletter The Fieldworker and provides training courses in fieldwork techniques and post-excavation skills, as well as a regular lectures and field trips for members. Many of its local groups carry out fieldwalking, small excavations and test pitting in their local area. The Fieldworkers are affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology, and work closely with University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) and the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS). The Fieldworkers help to set up and support local groups who wish to undertake fieldwork or projects to investigate their local area. Whilst the impetus usually comes from local groups and individuals, the Fieldworkers will get involved as requested and provide advice, skills, training and resources.
Membership fees are kept low and newsletters are sent out by email where possible although we recognise that not all members have the technology and will send out a paper newsletter when requested.
You do not need to be active in archaeology to be a member, many people simply wish to be kept up to date with the latest archaeological discoveries from the region and have news of what is happening near them, but don’t wish to actively take part. All members are important to us and demonstrate the local interest in our archaeology and heritage in the county and ensure that it remains protected.

The Group also runs a secondhand bookstall at various archaeological and historical events held around the County. This is supported by Aucott and Thomas, secondhand & antiquarian booksellers of Ibstock. Donations of relevant books are also very welcome. Please contact us via this website.
