Training

A number of Fieldworker training courses are held each year at the University of Leicester, out in the field or at other venues around Leicestershire and Rutland. It is also possible to join local groups who are already walking or excavating as they will provide training. See the Our Groups page for further information on our affiliated groups.

If there are any archaeological skills that you or your group would like training in please Contact Us and we will see if we can arrange a training session/course.

GIS training

Hallaton Fieldwork Group are running a series of talks and workshops on archaeological data visualisation and interpretation throughout 2023 and 2024, which Leicestershire Fieldworkers members are warmly invited to attend.

  • Monday 2 October 2023, 7.30pm – A talk on ‘An Introduction to QGIS for Archaeologists’ at Slawston Village Hall LE16 7UE (no need to book)

  • Sunday 5 November 2023, 10am (lasting 3 hours) – a hands-on workshop on ‘Getting Started with QGIS for Archaeology’ at the University of Leicester. For more information and to book a place on the workshop please email hallatonfwg@yahoo.co.uk. The Workshop will cost £5 to cover refreshment expenses.

QGIS is an open-source Geographic Information System and it is a great way of visualising and analysing fieldwork data, so it is hoped that these courses will inspire members of fieldwork groups to get mapping.
