Step Into the Past This Summer at the Festival of Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeology

Over 130 events celebrate local heritage, archaeology and nature across four weeks

The Festival of Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeology returns this summer, running from Saturday 4 July to Sunday 2 August, with an exciting programme of more than 130 events designed to inspire people of all ages to discover the rich heritage, archaeology and natural history of the two counties.

This year’s festival explores the theme ‘Archaeology and Nature’, highlighting the fascinating relationship between people and the landscapes they have inhabited for thousands of years. From wildlife and geology to historic buildings and ancient settlements, the festival reveals how communities have shaped – and been shaped by – the natural world.

Organised by Leicestershire Fieldworkers, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026, the festival will feature a special anniversary exhibition at Harborough Museum, alongside satellite displays at museums and libraries across the county.

Visitors can choose from a packed programme of activities, including:

  • Guided heritage walks through historic villages such as Nanpantan, Mowsley, Kirby Muxloe and Hoby.
  • Expert-led tours of iconic sites including Launde Abbey, Bradgate Park and Burrough Hill.
  • Opportunities to explore remarkable landmarks, from Hallaton’s Norman motte-and-bailey castle to the lost remains of Mountsorrel Castle, once known as the “Nest of the Devil”.
  • Talks by leading specialists covering topics such as Richard III, Tudor and Stuart mansions, recent excavations at Leicester Market Place and the Melton Bypass, and metal detecting discoveries in the Wreake Valley.
  • Family-friendly events, exhibitions and hands-on activities at venues including Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre, Bradgate Park, Leicester’s Cultural Quarter, The Old Rectory in Loughborough, and museums throughout Leicestershire and Rutland.

The festival also offers self-guided walks and opportunities to discover hidden heritage sites at your own pace, making it easy for everyone to get involved, whether they are seasoned history enthusiasts or completely new to archaeology.

Peter Liddle, Festival Co-ordinator, said “There is something for everyone in this year’s Festival. We are passionate about our local heritage and hope to share that passion with even more people. The programme would not be possible without the extraordinary support of local heritage groups across Leicestershire and Rutland.”

The festival forms part of the Council for British Archaeology’s national Festival of Archaeology, taking place from Saturday 18 July to Sunday 2nd August, connecting local communities with the UK’s largest celebrations of archaeology and heritage.

Whether you’re interested in ancient landscapes, local history, archaeology, wildlife or simply discovering somewhere new, the Festival of Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeology offers countless opportunities to explore the stories that have shaped our communities.
